I have been dreaming about traveling this route for some time and I came across a company (Kudu Expeditions) that arranges guided motorcycle expeditions to a number of destinations around the world.
The thing with this kind of guided trip is.. it costs quite a bit, I don't ride a bike anymore and it wouldn't be much of an adventure if everything is planned for you in advance. So I am toying with the idea of perhaps doing it in a buggy, I know a few others that have done this kind of long journeys and VW based buggies also had a big presence at the Baja 500 and Pikes Peak back in the day so they should mechanically be up for it (with some preparation of course).
Has anyone else here ever thought about doing something like this or have I gone completely bonkers? =)

I am modifying a beetle towbar to fit on my buggy and when I thought I was done cutting, welding and fabricating, I discovered a whole lot of rust hiding right under where the towing arm sits =( a closer inspecion revealed that the towbar is almost unusable without extensive repair work.
Does anyone have any experience of fittinga towbar onto a buggy? Are there other avenues that I should be exploring instead of using a beetle towbar?  less
